Sometimes we need to upgrade our windows firmware to a newer version. But we lost extra space by Windows.old folder after completing the update. Are you facing this problem? You can delete it — but not like you’d delete a normal folder.
What Is the Windows.old Folder?
The Windows.old folder is a backup file for your older Windows version. If someone upgrades a new version of Windows into PC, the Windows.old folder contains all the files and data from previous Windows. If notice something wrong in new Windows installation, you could also find into the Windows.old folder and find it.
After a month Windows will automatically delete the Windows.old folder to free up space. But, don’t wait too long, go ahead.
Access the Windows.old folder at C:\Windows.old to recover individual files from the Windows.old folder. Your will find personal files under C:\Windows.old\Users\file name.
How to Delete the Windows.old Folder to Free Up Space
Completely delete Windows.old folder using the Windows Disk Cleanup tool.On Windows 10, go to the Start button or click on Cortana search, type "Disk cleanup" and you will see the result. Now launch the Disk cleanup application. You can also right-click the C:\ drive in File Explorer, select Properties, and click the “Disk Cleanup” button under the General tab.
Now select the drive for cleanup. Then click the "Clean up system files" from the popup windows. Again choose the cleanup drive.
Check "Previous Windows installation(s)" from the list, and Disk Cleanup will tell you how much space those files are taking up. You can also use this tool to clean other unnecessary files taking up space on your system drive.
After completing all task just restart your PC and check the Windows.old folder at C:// drive to confirm it is delete. BEST
